The Million Club — Every AI Character & Roleplay Platform Ranked by Real Traffic

The Rule

People don't just want to use AI. They want to talk to someone who isn't there.

The Million Club — Characters & Roleplay Edition. This is the ranking nobody in Silicon Valley talks about at conferences but everyone tracks privately. 46 AI character and roleplay platforms generating over 562 million monthly visits. Every single one offers free access.

Character.AI leads at 207 million across two domains — more traffic than Perplexity, more than Claude, more than Midjourney. JanitorAI at 94 million. SpicyChat at 53 million. Candy AI at 40 million across three domains. These numbers tell a story that the AI industry's marketing decks don't: the largest consumer AI use case by engagement isn't productivity or search. It's companionship.

I tracked every AI character platform that crossed (or nearly crossed) 1 million monthly visits. All 46 entries are free to use — the only Million Club category with a 100% free-tier rate. The data comes from SimilarWeb, reflecting December 2025 estimates. I aim to refresh these numbers around the 22nd of each month.

The Full Rankings

All 46 AI character and roleplay platforms, ranked by monthly traffic. Every entry offers a free tier — the only Million Club category where this is true. Two entries fall just below 1 million visits but are included as significant players in the ecosystem.

The Big Three

Character.AI, JanitorAI, and SpicyChat together account for 338 million monthly visits — 60% of the entire category's traffic concentrated in three platforms. This isn't unusual for consumer tech, but what's unusual is the engagement depth: average session durations on character platforms consistently exceed 20 minutes, dwarfing traditional chatbot interactions.

Character.AI (191.31M + 15.41M)

The undisputed leader at 207 million across two domains. Character.AI pioneered the concept of user-created AI characters — anyone can build a character with a custom personality, backstory, and conversation style. The platform hosts millions of characters spanning fictional, historical, and original creations. Google invested $2.5 billion. The engagement numbers are staggering: users spend more time on Character.AI than on ChatGPT.

JanitorAI (94.25M)

The unrestricted alternative. JanitorAI's 94 million monthly visits make it the second-largest character platform — built on the premise that users should define their own content boundaries. Its character card system and API flexibility have made it the platform of choice for users who find Character.AI's content filters too restrictive.

SpicyChat (52.83M)

The third pillar at 53 million. SpicyChat has carved a massive audience with character chat that emphasizes creative freedom. The gap between SpicyChat and the fourth-place CrushOn (23M) is larger than CrushOn's entire traffic — the Big Three have separated decisively from the field.

💡

Character.AI's 207 million combined visits make it larger than Perplexity (180M), Claude (103M), or Midjourney (63M). The character chat use case has quietly become one of the largest consumer AI categories in existence — yet receives a fraction of the media coverage.

The Companion Economy

Below the Big Three, a distinct category has emerged: AI companion platforms. These aren't character roleplay in the broad sense — they're specifically designed around the virtual relationship experience. CrushOn at 22.64 million, Candy AI at 20.38 million, GPT Girlfriend at 11.28 million, Joi at 10.09 million.

The companion tier collectively represents roughly 130 million monthly visits — platforms like Besitos (9.37M), Lovescape (4.22M), BabeChat (3.06M), GoLove (2.73M), Kindroid (2.1M), HeraHaven (1.73M), and Nomi (1.09M). These platforms share a distinct product philosophy: fewer characters, deeper relationships. Where Character.AI optimizes for breadth (millions of characters), companion platforms optimize for depth (one persistent relationship with memory and emotional continuity).

Candy AI is the most aggressive multi-domain player in this space, spanning three domains — candy.ai (20.38M), candynetwork.ai (17.16M), and candyai.love (2.06M) — for a combined 39.6 million monthly visits. That makes Candy the fourth-largest entity in the category by combined traffic, ahead of every other single-domain platform except the Big Three.

💡

The companion economy's 100% free-tier rate is deceptive — most revenue comes from premium features (extended memory, voice chat, image generation) rather than access gates. The free tier serves as an engagement funnel, not a product. This mirrors the mobile gaming model: free to play, pay to deepen the experience.

The Creative & Fiction Layer

Not everything in this ranking is about companionship. A significant cluster of platforms serves creative and narrative purposes — interactive fiction, collaborative storytelling, and AI-assisted novel writing.

Perchance (20.14M)

The Swiss Army knife of creative AI. Perchance combines roleplay chat with image generation and random content generation tools. Its 20 million visits make it the largest platform in this category that isn't primarily about character companionship — it's about creation.

AI Dungeon (3.83M)

The original AI interactive fiction game. AI Dungeon pioneered the concept of AI-generated storytelling in 2019, predating the current wave by years. At 3.83 million monthly visits, it remains the benchmark for open-ended AI adventure games. Infinite Worlds (1.23M) carries a similar torch.

Chub AI (6.57M)

The character card marketplace. Chub is to AI characters what GitHub is to code — a repository where creators share, discover, and remix character definitions. Its 6.57M visits reflect a community focused on building rather than just consuming.

Story & Novel Platforms

FlowGPT (2.18M) serves as a roleplay chatbot hub. Rofan AI (1.51M) specializes in AI novel writing. RedQuill (1.09M) and AI Smut Writer (1.67M) serve creative fiction. Doo Novel (1.21M) focuses on AI-translated novels. Fiction Lab (982K) combines roleplay with story generation.

The creative layer proves that AI character technology isn't a single-use-case phenomenon. The same underlying technology — language models with persona conditioning — powers everything from a virtual companion to a collaborative novel-writing tool to an open-world adventure game. The applications are as varied as human imagination.

Multi-Domain Empires

Two companies in this ranking operate across multiple domains, significantly changing their real scale:

Character.AI — 206.72M combined

character.ai191.31M
c.ai15.41M
Combined: 206.72M/month

Candy AI — 39.6M combined

candy.ai20.38M
candynetwork.ai17.16M
candyai.love2.06M
Combined: 39.6M/month

Character.AI's c.ai short domain alone (15.41M) would rank 8th as an independent platform. Candy AI's three-domain strategy — splitting between the main product, a network portal, and an alternate brand — is unique in this category and suggests deliberate geographic or demographic segmentation.

The Long Tail

Below 2 million monthly visits, 18 platforms form the long tail of AI character chat. These aren't failed products — they're niche communities with dedicated user bases. Platforms like Sakura.fm (1.44M), RisuAI (1.27M), HiWaifu (1.24M), and Character Tavern (1.21M) each serve specific preferences that the larger platforms don't address.

Chai Research at 1.44 million is notable as one of the few platforms in this category with an explicit research angle — studying human-AI interaction patterns through its chat platform. Nomi AI at 1.09 million focuses on persistent memory and emotional continuity, positioning itself as the "deep relationship" option. Xoul AI at 1.09 million serves the Korean-language market.

Two entries fall just below 1 million: MySpicyVanilla (991K) and Fiction Lab (982K). Both are creative fiction platforms rather than companion tools, and both are close enough to the threshold that a single viral moment could push them over. They're included because they represent meaningful parts of the ecosystem.

Key Patterns

After analyzing all 46 platforms, several patterns emerge that distinguish this category from every other Million Club ranking:

01

100% Free Access

Every single platform offers free access. This is unique across all Million Club categories. The business model is universally freemium — free chat with premium features (extended memory, voice, image generation, uncensored modes). The free tier is the product; premium is the enhancement.

02

Extreme Traffic Concentration

The top 3 platforms (Character.AI, JanitorAI, SpicyChat) hold 60% of all category traffic. The top 10 hold 83%. This is steeper than any other Million Club category — a winner-take-most dynamic driven by network effects around character libraries and community content.

03

The Content Spectrum

Platforms self-sort along a content restriction spectrum. Character.AI occupies the most-filtered end. JanitorAI and SpicyChat occupy the middle. Platforms like Uncensored.com (1.73M) and NSFW Lover (1.53M) occupy the other end. User migration between platforms is often driven by content policy changes.

04

Session Depth Over Breadth

Character platforms optimize for session duration, not task completion. Users spend 20-40 minutes per session — far exceeding the 3-5 minutes typical of productivity AI. This makes character platforms among the most engagement-dense AI products ever built, rivaling social media for time spent.

05

Community-Created Content

The largest platforms are marketplaces, not products. Character.AI hosts millions of user-created characters. Chub AI (6.57M) exists purely as a character card repository. FlowGPT (2.18M) is a chatbot prompt marketplace. The value is in the community's creations, not the platform's own content.

Methodology

All traffic numbers come from SimilarWeb, reflecting December 2025 estimates.

This ranking covers 46 AI character chat and roleplay platforms. The category was defined broadly to include character roleplay platforms (Character.AI, JanitorAI), virtual companion platforms (Candy AI, CrushOn), interactive fiction (AI Dungeon, Infinite Worlds), creative writing tools (Rofan, RedQuill), and character card repositories (Chub AI). All share a common technology foundation: language models conditioned with persistent character personas.

Multi-domain entities: Character.AI operates across character.ai (191.31M) and c.ai (15.41M) for 206.72M combined. Candy AI operates across candy.ai (20.38M), candynetwork.ai (17.16M), and candyai.love (2.06M) for 39.6M combined. Each domain is listed independently per SimilarWeb's tracking methodology.

Two entries fall below 1 million visits: myspicyvanilla.com (991K) and fictionlab.ai (982K). Both are included as meaningful ecosystem participants near the threshold.

Update Schedule

I plan to refresh this ranking around the 22nd of each month. The character chat category is among the most volatile in the Million Club — new platforms can gain millions of visits in weeks, and content policy changes at major platforms trigger rapid user migration. Expect significant movement between updates.

"46 platforms. 562 million monthly visits. Every one free to use. Character.AI at 207 million across two domains — bigger than Perplexity, bigger than Claude, bigger than most tools that dominate the AI headlines. The character and roleplay category is the consumer AI use case that nobody predicted and nobody can ignore. When people say AI will change how humans relate to technology, this is what they mean — not a better spreadsheet formula, but a conversation with someone who isn't there, who remembers what you said last time, and who is always available. The numbers don't lie. This is what people actually want from AI."
